This large oil painting on canvas, called Quadrille, is part of a series that explored abstraction in the modernist tradition and was influenced by painters such as Lee Krasner, Larry Poons and Joan Mitchell. These are artists whose work clearly expressed the joy of putting brush to canvas and becoming “…entranced and quick with awareness, alive to the faintest nuance, the subtlest play of pigment, line and form”.

These works are also experiments with abstraction, using techniques that draw attention to the process and materials used in creating them and are not part of the realist tradition. I seek to negotiate a middle path between aesthetic appeal and sterile abstraction; between the grip of the past and newness for its own sake. I also want to communicate the joy of colours, lines and forms depicted in oil paint – to communicate at a visceral rather than an intellectual level. For a further discussion about the role of painting and how my work fits in, please visit this May 2022 blog post.

This painting does not need a frame & is ready to hang.

The post Quadrille first appeared on Marion-Lea Jamieson, Artist.

Bird with Leaves, 2023, Marion-Lea Jamieson, archival printing inks on board, 18.95” w x 13.4” h

The post Bird with Leaves first appeared on Marion-Lea Jamieson, Artist.

This unique green monochrome print, called Bird With Leaves, was made using stable, light fast inks on a wood substrate, so it is durable and made to last. The printed image was created from an original sketch done on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada.

The drawing style of Bird With Leaves was influenced by techniques used in a time before mass produced printing, when artists carved images on wood, rolled ink on top and pressed the image onto paper. They became astonishingly skilled at depicting the world using cross-hatched lines to convey light, shade, form and texture. Later printmakers used this technique to create line drawings of incredible detail etched into metal plates. Many artists keep this time-honoured and highly-skilled tradition alive and I have studied both the early and more modern practitioners to develop my own style.

I have moved to a semi-rural area on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, where deer graze in my front yard and Green Bird With Leaves gives a sense of all the wild creatures that live alongside us. I am producing prints such as Bird With Leaves using durable outdoor printing inks on wood as they can be framed without glass or matting. So they create unique but affordable artworks that are easy and inexpensive to ship. Each one is unique and I really like the somewhat folksy but sophisticated results. For more on the inspiration behind this series and Bird With Leaves, please visit my January 2024 blog.

Bird With Leaves is shipped with an artist-made, sturdy, stained black wood frame and is ready to hang.

The post Bird with Leaves first appeared on Marion-Lea Jamieson, Artist.
