Lily Pads, B&W, 2023, Marion-Lea Jamieson, Printing inks on wood, 24 3/8" w x 15 5/8" h

The post Lily Pads, B&W first appeared on Marion-Lea Jamieson, Artist.

This unique black and white print, called Lily Pads, B&W, was made using stable, light fast inks on a wood substrate, so it is durable and made to last. The printed image was created from an original sketch of a pond with an interesting pattern of ripples and underwater stems.

The drawing of Lily Pads, B&W, was influenced by techniques used in a time before mass produced printing, when artists carved images on wood, rolled ink on top and pressed the image onto paper. They became astonishingly skilled at depicting the world using cross-hatched lines to convey light, shade, form and texture. Later printmakers used this technique to create line drawings of incredible detail etched into metal plates. Many artists keep this time-honoured and highly-skilled tradition alive and I have studied both the early and more modern practitioners to develop my own style.

I have moved to a semi-rural area on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, where deer graze in my front yard and Lily Pads, B&W gives a sense of the quiet beauty of island life. I am producing prints such as Lily Pads, B&W, using durable outdoor printing inks on wood as they can be framed without glass or matting. So they create unique but affordable artworks that are easy and inexpensive to ship. Each one is unique and I really like the somewhat folksy but sophisticated results. For more on the inspiration behind this print & others in the series, please visit my January 2024 blog.

Lily Pads, B&W, is shipped with an artist-made, sturdy wood frame, either painted or stained, and is ready to hang. These prints do not require matting and glass so are economical to ship. Please allow an extra 3 weeks for delivery of prints that are out of stock.

The post Lily Pads, B&W first appeared on Marion-Lea Jamieson, Artist.
