This unique dark-brown, green & pink print, called Lily Pads, Pink, has stable, light fast inks on a wood substrate, so it is durable and made to last. The printed image was created from an original sketch done of a pond with ripples on the surface and roots just visible beneath.

The drawing style of Lily Pads, Pink was influenced by techniques used in a time before mass produced printing, when artists carved images on wood, rolled ink on top and pressed the image onto paper. They became astonishingly skilled at depicting the world using cross-hatched lines to convey light, shade, form and texture. Later printmakers used this technique to create line drawings of incredible detail etched into metal plates. Many artists keep this time-honoured and highly-skilled tradition alive and I have studied both the early and more modern practitioners to develop my own style.

I have moved to a semi-rural area on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, where deer graze in my front yard and Lily Pads, Pink gives a sense of the quiet beauties that live among us. I am producing prints such as Lily Pads, Pink using durable outdoor printing inks on wood as they can be framed without glass or matting. So they create unique but affordable artworks that are easy and inexpensive to ship. Each one is unique and I really like the somewhat folksy but sophisticated results.

For more on the inspiration behind this and other prints in the series, please visit my January 2024 blog.

Lily Pads, Pink is shipped with an artist-made, sturdy, stained wood frame and is ready to hang.

The post Lily Pads, Pink first appeared on Marion-Lea Jamieson, Artist.

From Time to Time, 2020, by Marion-Lea Jamieson, oil painting on canvas, 42" h x 35" w.

The post From Time to Time first appeared on Marion-Lea Jamieson, Artist.

This mid-sized oil painting on canvas, called From Time To Time, is part of a series of works called Time Lines that was done from 2019-2021. The images for this piece was inspired by stylized female figures from European Neolithic art and culture, thousands of years ago.

Some of the works in this series, such as From Time To Time, were a visual exploration of images of women in pre-history. In a my May 2020 blog, I compare the role of women in Neolithic and contemporary eras especially with regard to religion.

From Time To Time also experiments with form; using techniques that draw attention to the process and materials used in creating them and are not part of the realist tradition. I seek to negotiate a middle path between aesthetic appeal and sterile abstraction; between the grip of the past and newness for its own sake. So while my current work has a conceptual motivation, I also want to communicate the joy of colours, lines and forms depicted in oil paint – to communicate at a visceral rather than an intellectual level.

No frame is needed for From Time To Time & it is ready to hang.

The post From Time to Time first appeared on Marion-Lea Jamieson, Artist.
