This original oil painting on canvas, Lost in Time #1, is from a series called Time Lines. The images for this series were inspired by stylized female figures from the European Neolithic art and culture that flourished from about 3000-6000 BCE. Most of the works in the series, are a visual exploration of the role of women in pre-history, especially with regard to religion. The European Neolithic culture’s reverence for nature as Earth Mother was expressed in their arts. This took the form of inscriptions on ceramics and their sculptural images that often depicted sacred female forms or goddesses. These goddesses were powerful deities often taking the shape of animal/human hybrids that showed the relationship between the female life-force and the forces of nature.

The post Lost in Time #1 first appeared on Marion-Lea Jamieson, Artist.

This unique dark blue-green and gold print, called The Two Ponies, Vignette was made using stable, light fast inks on a wood substrate, so it is durable and made to last. The printed image was created from an original drawing of my sister’s ponies in a field on Bowen Island, British Columbia.

The drawing style of The Two Ponies, Vignette was influenced by techniques used in a time before mass produced printing, when artists carved images on wood, rolled ink on top and pressed the image onto paper. They became astonishingly skilled at depicting the world using cross-hatched lines to convey light, shade, form and texture. Later printmakers used this technique to create line drawings of incredible detail etched into metal plates. Many artists keep this time-honoured and highly-skilled tradition alive and I have studied both the early and more modern practitioners to develop my own style.

I have moved to a semi-rural area on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, where deer graze in my front yard and The Two Ponies, Vingnette gives a sense of the serene beauty that surrounds us. I am producing prints such as The Two Ponies, Vignette using durable outdoor printing inks on wood as they can be framed without glass or matting. So they create unique but affordable artworks that are easy and inexpensive to ship. Each one is unique and I really like the somewhat folksy but sophisticated results. For more on the inspiration behind this and other prints in the series, please visit my January 2024 blog.

The Two Ponies, Vignette is shipped with an artist-made, sturdy, stained wood frame and is ready to hang. These prints do not require matting and glass so are economical to ship.

The post The Two Ponies, Vignette first appeared on Marion-Lea Jamieson, Artist.

This large oil painting on canvas, called To & Fro, is part of a series that explored abstraction in the modernist tradition and was influenced by painters such as Lee Krasner, Larry Poons and Joan Mitchell. These are artists whose work clearly expressed the joy of putting brush to canvas and becoming “…entranced and quick with awareness, alive to the faintest nuance, the subtlest play of pigment, line and form”.

These works are also experiments with abstraction, using techniques that draw attention to the process and materials used in creating them and are not part of the realist tradition. I seek to negotiate a middle path between aesthetic appeal and sterile abstraction; between the grip of the past and newness for its own sake. I also want to communicate the joy of colours, lines and forms depicted in oil paint – to communicate at a visceral rather than an intellectual level. For a further discussion about the role of painting and how my work fits in, please visit this Februry 2017 blog post.

This unique dark purple & light yellow print, called Sunlight on Water, was made using stable, light fast inks on a wood substrate, so it is durable and made to last. The printed image was created from an original sketch of Boyer Island in Howe Sound, British Columbia, done from the ferry leaving Horseshoe Bay as sunlight broke through storm clouds. Sunlight on Water gives a sense of the wild beauty that still lives alongside us here on the West Coast of BC.

The drawing style of Sunlight on Water, was influenced by techniques used in a time before mass produced printing, when artists carved images on wood, rolled ink on top and pressed the image onto paper.

This mid-sized oil painting on canvas, called Now and Then, is part of a series of works called Time Lines that was done from 2019-2021. The image was inspired by a stylized female figure from European Neolithic art and culture, thousands of years ago. Neolithic art was focused on female fertility and the regenerative power of the earth, a concept that is alien to patriarchal societies. I was most interested in the European Neolithic era because it would have been the birthplace of my ancient forebears. I was intrigued by the ideas of Marija Grimbutas , a Lithuanian archaeologist and anthropologist, known for her research into the Neolithic cultures of “Old Europe”.

Some of the works in this series, such as this one, were a visual exploration of images of women in pre-history. For more about this aspect of the series, please visit my May 2020 blog.

The works in this series are experiments with form; using techniques that draw attention to the process and materials used in creating them and are not part of the realist tradition. I seek to negotiate a middle path between aesthetic appeal and sterile abstraction; between the grip of the past and newness for its own sake. So while my current work has a conceptual motivation, I also want to communicate the joy of colours, lines and forms depicted in oil paint – to communicate at a visceral rather than an intellectual level.

No frame is needed for this painting & it is ready to hang.

The post Now and Then first appeared on Marion-Lea Jamieson, Artist.

This very large oil painting on canvas, called Square Dance, is part of a series that explored abstraction in the modernist tradition and was influenced by painters such as Lee Krasner, Larry Poons and Joan Mitchell. These are artists whose work clearly expressed the joy of putting brush to canvas and becoming “…entranced and quick with awareness, alive to the faintest nuance, the subtlest play of pigment, line and form”.

These works are also experiments using techniques that draw attention to the process and materials used in creating them and are not part of the realist tradition. In this series, I aimed to negotiate a middle path between aesthetic appeal and sterile abstraction; between the grip of the past and newness for its own sake. I also wanted to communicate the joy of colours, lines and forms depicted in oil paint – to communicate at a visceral rather than an intellectual level.

This unique black and white print, called Small Island, B&W, was made using stable, light fast inks on a wood substrate, so it is durable and made to last. The printed image was created from an original sketch done at Sunset Cove on the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia.

The drawing of Small Island, B&W, was influenced by techniques used in a time before mass produced printing, when artists carved images on wood, rolled ink on top and pressed the image onto paper.

I have moved to a semi-rural area on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, where deer graze in my front yard and Small Island, B&W gives a sense of the ruggedly serene beaches on the West Coast.

The Golden Bird, 2023, by Marion Lea Jamieson, archival printing inks on wood, 23”w x 15”h.

The post The Golden Bird first appeared on Marion-Lea Jamieson, Artist.

This unique print, called The Golden Bird, depicts a gold and brown bird on a branch with green leaves. It was made using stable, light fast inks on a wood substrate, so it is durable and made to last. The printed image was created from an original sketch done on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada.

The drawing style of The Golden Bird, was influenced by techniques used in a time before mass produced printing, when artists carved images on wood, rolled ink on top and pressed the image onto paper.

I have moved to a semi-rural area on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, where deer graze in my front yard and The Golden Bird gives a sense of the wild beauty that lives alongside us. I am producing prints such as The Golden Bird using durable outdoor printing inks on wood as they can be framed without glass or matting. So they create unique but affordable artworks that are easy and inexpensive to ship. Each one is unique and I really like the somewhat folksy but sophisticated results. For more on the inspiration behind this print & this series, please visit my January 2024 blog.
